eXact.SearchBar Browser Plug-in Information

Name: eXact.SearchBar
Category: Browser Plug-in
Advice: Remove
Risk: Moderate Risk Moderate threats may profile users online habits or broadcast data back to a server with 'opt-out' permission. In most cases this type of threat is more along the lines of commercial type adware that offer a premium service in exchange for tracking your user online performance.
Description: eXactSearchBar is an Internet Explorer toolbar with standard search features that performs targeted advertising based on the computer usage and the URLs associated with Web pages.

eXactSearchBar is part of the "Mail.com search bar." This adware component runs as a Browser Helper Object (BHO), which means that the adware component receives information regarding all the Internet Explorer actions. EXactSearchBar’s adware component will submit usage information, regarding the use of the search bar itself, to the server www.exactsearchbar.com, on port 80. The program opens pop-up advertising when targeted words appear in the URL or search engine terms.

Even though The End User License Agreement (EULA) of this adware component states:
"We do not transmit or collect personally identifiable information about your searching activity and do not store any personally identifiable information that records your searching behavior."

When the usage information is submitted to the server, a Global Unique Identifier (GUID) is also sent. Even though the GUID is not tied to a person, the usage history can be built based on the GUID. This history is then used to display targeted advertisements.

eXact Search Bar also has an auto update feature to remotely download and install updates to its software without the consent of the user.

From the EULA:
"By accepting to download the eXact Search Bar you are also accepting that eXact Advertising LLC may also deliver to you relevant contextual advertising in the form of
advertisements based on URLs and/or search terms you enter when navigating the Internet.
The technology used to do this anonymously identifies the interests of computer users based on their computer usage, and the URLs associated with the Web pages viewed. Often, such ads and informational messages will be published to computer screens on behalf of those who are competitors of the Web pages users may be viewing, or may have recently viewed. We do not transmit or collect your browsing activity or personal information and do not store any information that records your browsing behavior. We do not build profiles of our users or attempt to correlate demographic or personal information."
