Description: Cydoor is an adware program that downloads advertisements from a server and displays them on your computer.
Cydoor must be manually installed. However, there are several known programs that have Cydoor within them and that install it as the program.
Cydoor ships with many free programs such as iMesh, Kazaa, Limewire, Grokster, etc.
Cydoor embeds advertising in host software, converting it to "free" adware. User tracking is tied to the GUID (Global Unique Identifier): "Upon installation of a software application integrated with our advertising technology, Cydoor Technologies sets a numerical identifier on your computer."
Cydoor "services" are Windows 95/98/NT compatible. Q & A's from the Developers FAQ states: "Your software does not have to be Internet related. The only requirement is that users occasionally go on the Internet so that ads can be downloaded transparently while they are online."
Users do not have to be online while using software embedded with Cydoor: "Ads are pulled from the protected ad cache within each user's computer whether they are online or offline. Your program will continuously display ads from the cache until it is updated-which occurs the next time the user goes online. Ad loads and reports are transmitted the moment that happens."
Cydoor has cleaned up its act considerably since previous versions of its software. Previous versions left it up to the host application's vendor to disclose (or not) that Cydoor ad components were being installed, leading to a finger-pointing loop in cases where the software was not disclosed. Additionally, previous versions used a GUID to track individual users across multiple sessions. This has been removed from the current version, as verified by our tests and information on the Cydoor website. Cydoor's components now come with an uninstall feature that was not present in earlier versions.
Earlier versions of Cydoor CD_LOAD were similar to the TSADBOT ad-trojan. It is a seperate, always-loading component that digs itself into your Windows Registry (so as to load always on start-up) and refuses to uninstall. It connects to the Internet and downloads ads, transferring data (including a GUID unique to your computer) whether the associated app is running or not |
